In response to the howling I’m finally doing it. Here’s the first. With commentary. Feel free to re-order, I know people have OPINIONS about the ethics of putting the MGMT track first. I know it’s a bit like going to the shops in a lycra bodysuit to buy a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. But, you know. Also, it’s FINE to put multiple tracks by one band on a mix, so long as you make it a theme. Fuck you.

1. ‘Kids’ – MGMT.
3mins45-3mins52. I’ve had SUCH a solo dance party. Plus, they’re goddamn adorable. I maybe should’ve put two MGMT tracks on, instead of the gutter twins. Investigate them yourselves.

2. ‘Lie Down Here (And Be My Girl)’ – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
You COULD say it’s a bit like grinderman. But you wouldn’t be paying enough attention. Collect…the eels….that pour….from the hole….in my side….

3. ‘Ramshackle Day Parade’ – Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros.
Julian Schnabel is clearly an absolute cunt, but he’s responsible for introducing me to It’s All Over Now Baby Blue by Van, and if he didn’t try to be fucking trendy so often I’d probably be completely in love with what I imagine his collection of Cds (or, more likely, rare vinyl and fifty ipods) would be like. The Diving Bell and The Butterfly is a good film, by the way.

4. ‘Blind’ – Hercules And Love Affair.
It’s hard to know where to place a disco anthem fronted by Anthony Hegarty in a mix. So I’m just chucking it in. I know nobody likes it but me. I know. It’s lovely though! Oh fine. At least you can feel all up to date with what the mans up to. Come on! It’s interesting! And fucking catchy and I think his voice works a lot better on it than it does on his own stuff. No, seriously, I do. Think that. Plus it’s kind of heartbreaking. Lyrically. And the bass at the end is……hot.

5. ‘Idle Hands’ – The Gutter Twins.
I actually feel a bit weird about this, cos parts of it seem kind of….I can’t decide if the album is slightly dreadful. I know I like the Lanegan bits better, the other guys voice is fucking irritating. And is it REALLY okay to be writing by numbers metal riffs still? I dunno. I guess if I’m putting two songs on I should be a little more into it. I don’t know. I like it? I like how…..open….it is. I JUST LIKE IT.

6. ‘Angel’ -Massive Attack.
Just got reminded the other day, had a renaissance. Evil fucking thing.

7. ‘Hold On To Yourself’ – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
There are better tunes on the album but there aren’t any I like more.

8. ‘We All Die’ – Cat Power.
I want to cover this. What I really want is to live in it. I want this song to be my house.

9. ‘Seven Stories Underground’ – The Gutter Twins.
Like tom waits if tom waits grew up in the viper room. I just like it, in that funny way, allright, but I feel like someone’s going to listen and say something that nails why I feel weird about it, like…..oh, I don’t know….. ‘it’s actually shit’ and then I’ll never like it again.

10. ’Alice Wading’ – Dirty Three Live in Montreal.
Yeah, it’s got like five minutes of fussing about at the start. Atmosphere. Not only is the song what it is, but Warren Ellis is a comedic genius. Heartbreak and Laughter. They know what they doing, these Australians.

11. ‘No Stranger Than That’ -Dirty Three live in Montreal.
When I saw them, I’d never heard them before, and these two songs were the things that got me into it. It’s the second half of this one. How does a piece of wood MAKE THAT NOISE. Because Warren forces it to, that’s how.

12. ‘Pendulum’ – Dimmer.
And finish it off with something that may actually be even creepier than Angel. Creepy. CREEPY. And entirely unresolving.
